Shovel Ready Spademan Adam Sternbergh Books
Shovel Ready, Adam Sternbergh's first novel, explores the world of New York City in the years after a dirty bomb is detonated in Times Square. Half of the population has dispersed to less radioactive climes, and most of the half that remain spend their time hooked into virtual reality. Sternbergh paints a grim picture of life and culture in this environment, and presents Spademan as the hit man with a heart of gold.In this post-dirty-bomb New York, we meet Spademan, a garbage man turned hit man . He's not all that thrilled about his line of work, but he knows he's providing a valuable service. And it's not like he's culpable, any more than a bullet is culpable for a gunshot wound. Someone else is pulling the trigger. Having lost his wife in the terrorist bombings, his sense of ethics is deeply affected: "I may have once had some thin faith in something like cosmic justice, but now I believe in box cutters [his weapon of choice]. Everything else I left buried in a tunnel along with the number 2 train [where his wife died]." He does, however, have his limits. When he gets a request to kill a pregnant teen, he has to draw the line.
Given his qualms about killing the teen, who turns out to be the daughter of a famous evangelist, he ends up as more detective than hit man. With a little help from his friends, he uncovers a nefarious plot and saves the girl. Shovel Ready is gritty, raw fiction, with a style matching the bleakness of this future New York. Enjoyable, original, and likable.

Shovel Ready Spademan Adam Sternbergh Books Reviews
I found shovel ready on a flavorwire.com list of 2014's best fiction and thought it sounded interesting. It turned out to be my favorite read of 2014 thus far. I loved this book from its terse prose to its unique and prescient plot. Shovel ready is a dark but stimulating read that provokes thought and entertains throughout.
The book is set in a near future New York that has been the target of a dirty bomb, and so has become a dystopian setting long abandoned by most who could afford to leave. We follow Spademan, a garbageman turned hitman when the world changed. We learn that he kills men and women without remorse, but that his moral code will not allow him to kill anyone under 18. The novel picks up with his newest job, and he learns something about his target, a young woman who meets his adult requirement by just a couple of weeks, that sets the plot in motion.
Perhaps most interesting is that a newer and better form of internet called the limnosphere has become available to those with the money to use it. Reminiscent of the Bruce Willis movie "Surrogate", the limnosphere involves "tapping in" via a bed and then interacting in a virtual world where every touch and emotion is as authentic as the real world. Of course, to many with the means, the limnosphere has become preferable to the real world, and an entire economy of support for the "sleeping" user has been created. Security, nursing etc... I don't want to give away any of the plot, but suffice it to say that Spademan does plenty of work in and out of the limnosphere and it tends to be both interesting and thrilling as he uncovers the truth about his case as well as the shocking true reasons behind the limnosphere's success. Along the way, there are some really interesting characters and a lot of violent action. Shovel Ready, it seems to me, is also Hollywood ready, and I'll be shocked if this isn't a movie within a couple of years. I read that Sternbergh is already working on a second Spademan novel, and that makes me happy. Shovel Ready was a great bit of Cyberpunk with a modern, relevant feel. I highly recommend it.
This book was a very conflicting read for me. While I really enjoyed the conversation style of the writing, the lack of true dialogue was bothersome at times. This book follows Spademan who is a garbageman turned hit-man after a devastating dirty bomb attack on NYC. I really loved the description of just how destructive the attack was on the way of life. But it was also so strange to me that nothing was done to fix it.
This book focuses on Spademan's latest job to find and kill a famous evangelist's daughter Grace. However it is not that simple and Spademan is thrust into a world he doesn't fully understand.
For me this book was mediocre at best. I liked the premise and the hard-boil aspect of the character. But it was nothing special. I have the second book in this series for review and I have heard it is better than this one. So I'm looking forward to picking up the next book.
