Twisted An Intertwined Novel Gena Showalter Books
The way this series ended (and I have to say ended, not paused between books, since it was writen over 5 years ago and Gena has since written multiple other series) is ridiculous. It's cheating in the most frustrating literary way. There were SO many story lines going, and then.... Kidding, I take it back, the end. These books are not as well written as some of her more recent series (I quite liked Alice in Zombieland). The angst between the teens was too forced. The teens all living on the edge with no adult supervision is annoying. Seriously, Mary Ann's dad is a therapist who earlier in the series is so involved in her life, and he's cool with her writing a note then disappearing? Clearly this was a time with cell phones, since they all had them, but she won't check on him, nor he on her (but she will call her bestie, because that's obviously still an important relationship)? I struggle to even appreciate that I read this series. I did, back to back, but really wish I hadn't. The storyline was interesting enough to me to make up for the less than stellar writing and gaping character holes. But man, that ending just pushed me off the edge and makes me real hesitant to read any other books by Gena now. If an author is willing to conjure up that many story lines and then chop them all in 1.5 pages and call it the end of a series, I'm not willing to wade through that mess again.Tags : Amazon.com: Twisted (An Intertwined Novel) (9780373210381): Gena Showalter: Books,Gena Showalter,Twisted (An Intertwined Novel),Harlequin Teen,0373210388,Romance - General,Fantasy fiction,Fantasy.,Kings and rulers,Kings, queens, rulers, etc,Supernatural,Supernatural;Fiction.,Teenagers,Vampires,Vampires;Fiction.,Werewolves,Young adult fiction,10014838,115026X,20110901,707220,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Fantasy,Fantasy & Magic,Fiction,Fiction-Romance,JUVENILE,JUVENILE FICTION Love & Romance,JUVENILE FICTION Paranormal, Occult & Supernatural,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile Fiction Paranormal,Juvenile FictionFantasy & Magic,Juvenile FictionParanormal, Occult & Supernatural,Juvenile Grades 10-12 Ages 15+,Kings and rulers,Kings, queens, rulers, etc,Love & Romance,Paranormal,Paranormal; Romance; Vampire; Young Adult,Romance & relationships stories (Children's Teenage),Romance - General,Supernatural,Supernatural;Fiction.,Teenagers,Vampires,Vampires;Fiction.,Werewolves,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance General,Young Adult;Paranormal;Romance;Vampire,Young adult fiction,Fantasy & Magic,JUVENILE FICTION Love & Romance,JUVENILE FICTION Paranormal, Occult & Supernatural,Juvenile Fiction Paranormal,Juvenile FictionFantasy & Magic,Juvenile FictionParanormal, Occult & Supernatural,Love & Romance,Paranormal,YOUNG ADULT FICTION Romance General,Fantasy,Fiction,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 10-12),Romance & relationships stories (Children's Teenage)
Twisted An Intertwined Novel Gena Showalter Books Reviews
My Review
This book was not on my TBR list for this week, but my 16 year old teenage son has been reading this series with me and finished the book last night. He was so shattered by the book that he insisted I read it immediately so that we could discuss it. That should give you a hint of the upheaval in this book...there is a LOT of it.
This is an amazing series and it needs to be read as a series. These are not stand-alone books in my opinion. There is too much story that continues to build upon itself. This is book #3 in a series that is supposed to end with the next book. How in the world it is going to end, I have no idea. Quite honestly, I don't think Gena knows how it is going to end at this point. Every book, she talks about how hard they are to write, but that effort is evident in the quality of the books, because they are very good!
There are a core of four characters that flow throughout the series.
*Aden- he was born with the souls of 4 other people living within his brain. He is 16 and throughout the series, he is trying to release those souls although they have been like his parents to him his entire life. He was raised in the foster system and spent most of his life in and out of institutions because of the souls and the prevailing thought that he is schizophrenic.
*Victoria- vampire princess and Aden's love interest. She goes through such a huge transition throughout this book as a person and vampire.
*Riley- wolf shifter and bodyguard for Victoria. His transition throughout this book was the most heart-breaking to me. I just hope that something changes for him in the next book. He is involved with MaryAnne.
*MaryAnne- human that is somehow connected to Aden. They were born the same day and when they met, it set off a chain of events that set off the entire series. At the end of this novel, she is in a very bad place...at least headed there. Things are not looking well for MaryAnne...thinking positive thoughts for book #4.
*Tucker- MaryAnne's ex-boyfriend and half-demon. He is in such a Catch 22. His story breaks my heart all the way around and I really did not like where it went in this book. Not sure that anything can change, but am still hoping for book #4.
This book really didn't end well for any of the characters. I can deal with that, BUT OMG, the next book isn't supposed to be out until June, 2013!?!?! I am not sure that I can deal with that. I think that I am going to have to go live with Gena while she is writing to make sure that she settles everything correctly for these characters that I have grown to love.
OMG. OMFG! That's what I had to say after finish Gena Showalter's Twisted! It is a doozie of a cliffhanger and the downside is that from what I recall hearing in the blogosphere, the next one might not be til 2013. 2013!! Two years!! I am going to go absolutely insane! Never before--that I can recall--have I ever got so invested and involved with the characters and totally feeling for them! My fave of all is Riley and Mary Ann! I yearn for one of them to be the third person narrator! I guess because in some ways I feel myself relate to Mary Ann--being the quiet one and whatnot, not the super super smart part! And Riley, oh Riley! I just love that wolf!
And boy oh boy this story definitely rocked! In the beginning I was starting to worry about Aden and Victoria, things were complicated between them. Their relationship seemed to be taking turns for the worst. Victoria and Aden both changed dramatically.
Like always it's hard to get into all the details without giving away spoilers. Mostly because SO MUCH happened! OMG 564 pages was soooo not enough! Aden's trying to adjust to his new changes from Victoria and rule the vampires since he's their king, but with challenges coming left and right he's having a hard time. Victoria seems to be losing her vampire-ness while Aden's gaining some, and don't forget she still has a challenge to take in order to keep Aden to herself from that other vampire b*tch--whose name is escaping me for the moment!
Mary Ann is on the run if you recall, with her ex Tucker in tow. She's trying to help Aden out by figuring out who his other souls' true identities are. And Tucker is still a bit of a problem, he says he's not under Vlad's control anymore because after stabbing Aden under his orders, he took off to be with her to help dull his demon-ness. But Riley catches up with them, ending his fun. Mary Ann gets onto something, something big! She makes more than one shocking discovery, and of course there's some serious stuff happening between her and Riley. She still loves him, but this THING that happened which I can't say, is BIG and it kind of puts a wedge between them that totally broke my heart!
Vlad is still on the fringe of things and intent on ruining Aden's life. While Aden is still trying to help the souls with their unfinished business, and he does manage to send one more soul onto heaven or wherever at the end. But then something else HUGE happens. BIG TIME HUGE for ALL the characters! The 4 had separated and we left them all totally hanging in the moment, so it's killing me to have to wait so long for the next book. And the choices the characters make are really nagging at me, because I want to know the results. I want to know how things will end! Something BIG is going to happen to all of them and I want to know what it is now! Not 2 years from now! Oh I hope that was just a rumor--which I kinda doubt--and that a new book comes out next year. Plus there's word of a spinoff series featuring Riley's bros! Which sounds good!
So there's my review! Sorry I can't say more! Just so much happened and I so loved it and it excited and killed me, I feel if I talk more I might say something I shouldn't, these fingers have a mind of their own when typing sometimes! The book is well paced as its predecessors so the action is hardly ever dull, just when you get wrapped up with one's telling, we jump to another character and get sucked into their p.o.v. A tremendous read!
