I always enjoy reading Mr. Jackson's books. BECOMING NATIVE TO THE PLACE, really brings out the problems that we face in todays grab it, use it, throw it away, and move on society. Nothing of nature is sacred. Nothing of our rural world is attractive to the urbanites of today. I'm afraid Mr. Jackson's desire for a people who want to settle down and live a simple life in natural surroundings, is a hopeless wish for our current self-destroying society.

During this period of history, perhaps as had always been , the sense of belonging to a place is a kind of lost concept. In that regard this book gives some hints on how to become native to a place and get this concept right.
I purchased this book because I have become very interested in agriculture and rooting it and our communities in the local ecosystems of the places we live in. I this book looked like it was going to be a good introduction to this. Well, it was a good introduction to the values of Jackson's practice but doesn't say much about the practice itself. But perhaps that's because trying to apply something other than principles from a book would be counter to the respect for local specifics that Jackson has. Either way the book is well written and inspiring, but i still wish there were more specifics.
Very easy reading, short book.
Wes Jackson describes a growing perspective that we need to interact symbiotically with the earth rather than considering the earth a "resource" at our disposal. He mixes philosophy with actual personal experiences to further illustrate the story.
The fact that he began the Land Use Institute in Kansas and is still and active participant lends credibility to his dialog.
Those who have already read Silent Spring, A Sand County Almanac, Song for the Blue Ocean, The Third Plate, The Unsettling of America, Gaia's Garden, Wolf Willow, The Holy Earth, this book based on the lectures of Wes Jackson, founder of the Land Institute in Salina, Kansas is another essential.
it's very interesting. thought provoking...most books are but this one is really good. theres history, genetics, culture, etc. very good.
