I'm writing a "World War II" novel, and one of the scene-sequences takes place in the practically levelled wreckage of Berlin in the early spring of 45: This real life journal by an "Anonymous" author (she had been a German journalist, but was concerned for her safety, being perceived as having "worked for the Nazis" once the War was over), captures the real thing by a writer with mastery. Of course I have the French version, not the original German - of which I'm almost entirely ignorant; but the French does convey a sense of the Berlin-on-the-ground from the pov of the citizen that there's *always* room for in our learning of history.
